As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen human rights capacities and advance the documentation file, the Rights Defense Initiative organized a specialized training workshop for members of the “Mishte Noor Association for the Missing,” held at the Kobani Star Hotel Hall in the city of Kobani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop lasted for five consecutive days, with the participation of 8 members of the association, aimed at developing their skills and qualifying them in the field and in human rights, to enable them to continue their work in documentation and the search for missing persons in accordance with the highest international and humanitarian standards and rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course of the Training and Key Themes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop opened with a pre-training questionnaire to assess the participants’ baseline skills, after which the training sessions began, covering a set of core and specialized themes, namely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Human Rights and Legal Introduction: A comprehensive introduction to human rights and general international law, and an overview of transitional justice mechanisms and the role of civil society organizations therein, in connection with the missing persons file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best Practices and Documentation Ethics: A focus on the rules and ethics of documentation, foremost among them prior (informed) consent, chain of custody, post-interview impressions, dual referral, and objectivity and impartiality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Documenting Violations and Field Skills: Mechanisms for documenting the most prominent violations and the rules specific to them (particularly the documentation of torture, arbitrary detention, cases of missing persons, and the crime of genocide), in addition to developing skills in conducting interviews, preserving information through databases, and coding interviews and documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training days witnessed broad interaction and in-depth discussions among the participants on mechanisms for dealing sensitively with victims and the families of the missing, and on ways to address the field challenges facing the association’s work during documentation and search operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attendees also highlighted the suffering the association has faced over the past years, resulting from a lack of cooperation and the necessary facilitations from the competent authorities to uncover the truth, in addition to the scarcity of supplies and basic needs required to complete documentation and alleviate the tragedies of the families of the missing. The sessions emphasized the importance of strengthening partnership with civil society organizations and relevant authorities to facilitate this humanitarian and human rights work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training workshop concluded with a post-training questionnaire and an assessment of the progress made by the trainees during the course days, where the results showed tangible benefit that contributes to preparing and equipping them to deal with greater efficiency and professionalism with documentation files and the search for missing persons in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
